Tata Motors is all set to enter the Indian hot hatch segment currently at its nascent stages with the launch of the Tata Tiago Sport. The Tiago Sport will be a replacement to the sports version of the Tata Bolt which had its debut at the Delhi Auto Expo this year.
Tata had earlier revealed the sports version of its Bolt at the Delhi Auto Expo along with news about a possible launch of the Bolt sport, but poor sales figures of the Bolt has raised doubts regarding the viability of a sports version of the car. Instead, Tata Motors have planned to replace the sports version of its Bolt with the Tata Tiago Sport, a sports version of the newly launched Tiago.
The Tata Bolt Sport was set to be launched later this year and was set to compete with the likes of the Punto Abarth. The car would have been priced lower than the Abarth by a substantial amount, but the sales figures for the standard Bolt have not been promising and hence the company feels that the sports version of the Bolt which was expected to be priced higher than the standard offering might not be a viable solution.
Tata Motors with the launch of the new Tiago have been able to make in-roads into the hatchback segment. The Tiago has been received well by the Indian market and Tata Motors hopes that with the new Sports version of the Tiago being added in the line-up it will provide the company with a good boost not only in terms of sales figures but also help strengthen the brand image of the company.
The Tata Tiago Sport will get the 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine primarily designed for the Nexon compact SUV. The new engine will be made to pump out around 120HP for the Tiago sport using bigger turbos and some tweaks to its electronics. The Tiago sport will apart from the new engine be getting lowered suspension, stiffer damping system and an aggressive sporty body kit to help differentiate it from the standard variant.
Tata Motors has already sold over 5000 units of the Tiago since three months of its launch, making it the best-selling car yet to come out of Tata’s range of offerings. The new Tata Tiago Sport once launched will hopefully add to the success of the brand taking on competitions like the Punto Abarth and the upcoming Baleno RS from Maruti Suzuki.
