Tork Motorcycles is a Pune-Based company owned by entrepreneur Kapil Shelke and his father, are all set to launch the country’s first electric motorcycle named the Tork T6X.
India’s first electric motorcycle the Tork T6X is all set to be launched soon. Tork Motorcycles is a Pune-Based family run company owned by entrepreneur Kapil Shelke and his father, while also funded by two other angel investors – Ankit Bhati and Bhavesh Agarwal of Ola Cabs in their personal capacities. The company has already produced five prototypes and has planned to commercialise the fifth prototype named the T6X.
The Tork Motorcycles company has claimed that their new Tork T6X will have a range of around 100Km travel with a top speed of 85Kmph all on a single charge. Tork Motorcycle has been part of various races like the Isle of Man TTX-GP and the TTX-GP Championship for the last six years. The launch of the T6X model will be the first step for the Indian start-up venture to move towards commercial electric bikes. The Tork T6X is already nearing production stages and is all set to be launched in India in the next two months.
The owner Kapil Shelke mentioned that the company is awaiting the ARAI certificate and that the bike is all set for launch, but the company have not yet showcased the bike or mentioned any details regarding investments from either the family or the angel investors, just saying that the company is adequately funded. He also mentioned that apart from the Lithium-ion batteries they have no other imported spare parts or technologies.
Tork Motorcycles has a manufacturing plant which is almost ready for production in Chakan near Pune, with a total capacity to produce 50,000 units per year. Kapil Shelke said that he expects only 10,000 units to be produced and sold in the first financial year. Shelke also confirmed that charging stations will be set up in over 100 locations per city either before or along with the commercial launch initially in cities like Bangalore, Pune and Delhi while the second phase will include cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad.
